Officers and staff from the South Wales Police force have just completed two of the Institute of Leadership’s online programmes:
- Personal Leadership: a ten week programme that gets to the heart of who an individual is as a leader
- Women Leading: a six week programme based on positive psychology and strengths rather than trying to ‘fix’ women.
The response has been so positive the officers and staff want to complete another two leadership programmes about the psychology of leadership, which contain the latest understanding of leadership in practice.

The courses are delivered online and are therefore available for learners whenever and wherever required. Each session starts with an introductory video and is then supplemented with a variety of case studies, articles and research to help you discover your potential as a leader. Although the courses are mainly for self-study, it is recommended that group sessions are held within the organisation, so that all learners can then discuss the implications of what they have learned and put that into context within their own working environment.
Hilarie Owen, the CEO of the Institute of Leadership, met with some of the officers and staff who had completed their programme and discussed their challenges and how the online learning helped them.
The courses that the South Wales Police completed have CPD accreditation, so can be used to claim credits to add to personal development plans and gain further certification, as desired. Once completed, all learners are invited to become a member of the Institute of Leadership.
“When we launched our digital leadership platform we had no idea of how organisations would respond. Having spent years researching into how individuals actually learn leadership and being invited to Harvard to share that research, we just had to trust our instincts. But it proved right and now you can see the results in these personal accounts from those who have taken part in our courses…”
One of the Police’s staff members commented:
“I have never been able to get on with e-learning but you made this so easy to use and the videos made it feel that you were in the room talking, that I really enjoyed it and have learned so much.”
An Inspector on the Personal Leadership programme remarked:
“I really enjoyed this and found it very beneficial. I liked that I could do it whenever I wanted and that it was modular so I could do one session and then easily pick up where I left off.”
Another Inspector said:
“I liked the materials that supported the course, the case studies were really good and some of the stories were inspiring.”
A female officer who completed the Women Leading programme and concluded:
“I liked this course as it is designed specifically for women and can be very empowering. I hope that lots of women in the organisation can access this course as it will be beneficial to the programme.”
By giving individual employees a means for self-improvement, organisations can create a culture of learning necessary for a fast changing world whilst enhancing productivity and the collective capability. They will also gain loyalty and a sustainable leadership pipeline into the next generation.
